How To Write a Mission Statement

Here's How:

  1. List the organization's core competencies; its unique strengths and weaknesses.
  2. List the organization's primary customers, internal or external, by type, not by name.
  3. Review how each customer relates to each of the organization's strengths. Ask them if possible.
  4. Write a one-sentence description of each customer/strength pairing.
  5. Combine any that are essentially the same.
  6. List the sentences in order of importance to the organization's vision, if one exists.
  7. Combine the top three to five sentences into a paragraph.
  8. Ask your customers if they would want to do business with an organization with that mission.
  9. Ask your employees if they understand and support it and can act on it.
  10. Ask your suppliers if it makes sense to them.
  11. Incorporate the feedback from customers, employees and suppliers and repeat the process.
  12. When you have refined the paragraph into statements that clearly articulates the way the company wants to relate to those it effects, publish it to everyone. Post it on the wall, email it to everyone, etc.

Tips:

  1. A good mission statement provides strategic vision and direction for the organization and should not have to be revised every few years. Goals and objectives are the short-term measures used to get there.
  2. Revise the organization's mission statement when it is no longer appropriate or relevant.

I saw an amazing piece in USA Today just a few days ago. It was in the lower left corner of the front page of the business section called USA Today "Snapshots." Here's the exact quote:

"Most employers don't share company strategy - Of the companies with a formal strategy in place, 70% describe their performance as better than their competition, compared with 27% of those without it, according to a survey. Percentage of companies that tell their employees what the strategy is: 95% don't tell, 5% tell."

The survey, entitled "Making Strategy Execution a Competitive Advantage," was conducted by the Cognos/Palladium Group and included responses from 143 strategy-management professionals.

I wasn't surprised by the first result. It's difficult to perform if you don't have a strategy. On the other hand, I find it shocking that 95% of companies that have a strategy don't communicate it to their employees.

This just is not common sense. How can people execute a strategy if they don't know what it is?

Clarity of purpose and direction is one of the secrets in my book, 4 Secrets of High Performing Organizations. To me, creating and achieving clarity of purpose and direction goes something like this:

  • Your mission defines your purpose for being - why you are in business.
  • Your vision defines a medium-range goal - what you hope to accomplish in the next three to five years.
  • Your strategy defines a plan for reaching your three to five-year vision.
  • Your annual business plans break your strategic plan into one-year chunks.
  • Business unit, department and individual objectives define accomplishments for all organizational units and individual members of your organization.
  • If individual, department and business-unit objectives are met, you should achieve your annual business plan.
  • If you achieve your annual business plan each year, you have successfully executed your strategy, and you will have achieved your vision.

I don't know how any of this can happen if your people are not aware of your strategy. To me, communicating your strategy throughout your organization is so much common sense that it's a no-brainer.

Define Benefit to Define Contribution Pension Plan

Just before I quit my desk, I wonder maybe any interesting news at detik.com and walaaa.. I see this headline "Dana Pensiun PNS Bulanan Direncanakan Dihapus"

A predictable move by our goverment, following his bos, called uncle sam.

I read a book called Rich Dad Poor Dad and Cashflow Quadrant by Robert T Kiyosaki arround 2001 and I still remember something that concerned me a lot is swaping pension plan. A define benefit pension plan to define contribution pension plan. The difference is, in define benefit pension plan, one who retired will still have payment in his/her pension age per month, and in define contribution, one who retired will get amount of money when he/she left the company, the money is quite bigger but paid only one time.

As many of our seniors not have entrepreneur skill because they are so busy worked :), the define benefit pension plan really save them the rest of their life, its company or goverment responsibility to support them in their pension life. In define contribution, the goverment no longer take responsible to their pension life, it their own responsible, goverment will give much money to them for the rest of their life. It will depend on financial skill of each of them to survive. Some will build or run business, but can you imagine one who should rest after their work-time is over will struggle again in business world that very different from their previous world as employee? It's not easy... especially if they never build business before. Will they still manage money as same way as they manage money when they still employed? Run out of money at the end of the month? Don't you worry about that?

Would it change our mind?
I change my mind early, I mind my own business...

And that will give me some opportunities to find "sudden-investor" for my business.

Begin of Rain Season

Its about to begin to rain season in Jakarta. Some hard rain falls in Jakarta last week, makes me wet and cold while I bike home. I don't have any preparation yet, since my wife have told me several times to bring rain coat or buy a new one.

The sky is not clear today, rain seems to be fall again. My wife reported that rain has been fall in Thamrin Area, Center of Jakarta.

Consider this before rain season begin:
  1. Check personal transportation: cars or motorcycles.
  2. Check home for leakage, check the electricity too.
  3. Check home environtment.
  4. Check weather report daily on newspaper or television or internet.
  5. Prepare your clothes.
  6. Buy health, vitamins, healthy food, don't be sick.. i wish
I hope the rain doesn't fall when we bike home this afternoon, we bring motorcycles today.
I hope Jakarta would not get flood this rain season.

Report Seminar Internet Marketing with Anne Ahira

Apa yang disebut Internet Marketing (IM) adalah murni menjual atau menawarkan sesuatu lewat internet.

Strateginya banyak sekali, contoh: pay per "something" advertising, banner advertising, email, search engine, dll. Dari segi pembayarannya dapat dibagi 2 menjadi sistem multi level marketing dan sistem afiliasi.

Sistem afiliasi yang benar-benar mendatangkan uang (menurut Anne Ahira) adalah pay per sale, pay per lead/prospect, dan pay per click. Contoh pay per click adalah google adwords (untuk pemilik iklan) dan google adsense (untuk yang bersedia web-nya menjadi media iklan). Teknisnya, pemilik iklan bekerja sama dengan google dengan anggapan mesin pencari yang paling populer saat ini dapat memberikan leads yang dibutuhkan dengan bayaran mulai dari 5 sen per leads, nilai bayaran tergantung dari harga yang dijual dan tingkat persaingan keyword (google adwords). Google pun memberikan sebagian uang yang didapat dari pemilik iklan ke beberapa orang yang bersedia website-nya dipakai untuk menampilkan iklan dan/atau menempatkan google search engine (google adsense).

Seperti sasaran marketing umum yaitu mendapatkan leads atau prospects, sasaran IM adalah mendapatkan traffic sebanyak-banyaknya. Traffic dapat diartikan banyaknya pengunjung yang datang (leads) di website yang bisa dilihat pada web-counter sederhana yang biasa terpasang pada website atau pada fasilitas webanalizer pengelola webhosting.

Untuk mendatangkan traffic, suatu situs web harus memiliki informasi yang kira-kira diperlukan oleh para pengunjung. Informasi tersebut (isi web) harus bisa di-maintain sebagus mungkin agar dapat memuaskan pengunjungnya sehingga diharapkan akan datang lagi, atau pengunjung berasumsi bahwa web tersebut adalah ahlinya dari informasi yang mereka cari. Tips dari Anne Ahira mengenai isi web seperti itu adalah sesuaikan dengan kemampuan dan cocok dengan diri sendiri, salah satunya mulai dari hobi. Untuk para profesional, isi web dapat disesuaikan dengan demand (kebutuhan) saat ini. Demand ini dapat diketahui dari kata-kata yang paling sering dicari pada mesin pencari, dan tersedia tools untuk menelusurinya, contohnya di Wordtracker dan Overture.

Selanjutnya, website tersebut harus dioptimisasi agar dapat memperoleh prioritas tinggi dari suatu hasil pencarian melalui search engine. Optimisasi harus disesuaikan dengan pikiran search engine robot (SER). SER adalah sebuah sistem program komputer canggih yang akan memberikan hasil pencarian yang menurutnya paling baik dan paling relevan saat itu.
Saat ini, isi web yang paling disukai oleh SER adalah web yang berbentuk Authority Site (AS). AS adalah site yang benar-benar komplit membahas tentang suatu hal, sudah seperti portal yang isinya spesifik (niche), up to date, banyak artikel, banyak resource, banyak fasilitas, dan pokoknya dapat anggap mampu memenuhi keinginan para pengunjung.

Internet marketing terbukti bisa mendatangkan penghasilan bagi pelakunya. Internet Marketing Seminar

Try to learn about new thing interested me, Internet Marketing, and following advise from many business guru that said "always learn from the best" then this sunday morning I would like to attend a seminar by Anne Ahira, the number 1 Internet Marketing from Indonesia, and respected by Internet Marketter worldwide. I saw the list of attendant that show me some respected people from local business also join the seminar, some of them is very brillian business owner who I would like to learn from them about business, and I'm very happy that these brillian will be there with me.

Today I still have no idea how come the Internet Marketing work, and enrich that such expert internet marketters, but I will reveal that soon... I share to you then....
